Freestyle Repertory Theatre: Theatresports: Improv Your Mind

"TheatreSports" is a series of theater games in which two teams of actors compete to see who does better at improvising. The audience is involved throughout, beginning with suggestions for each improvisation, performing as players, and as final arbiters of each team's performance. Students learn about teamwork and how to build on each other's ideas as they join in the alchemical process that turns mundane, disconnected subjects into a hilarious whole.

Dr. Walter Bien, Director of the Pinelands Research Center at Drexel University, is one of the world's leading experts on the state's unique pinelands. He will be discussing how disturbance, both natural and man-made, affect this ecosystem. |

Rising Tide: Climate Change and New Jersey - (Grades: K-8) This student-lead but professionally trained Docent Tour of Rising Tide will provide students and their teachers with a guided tour of the exhibition that explains the concepts behind the exhibition, identifies key elements, and provides a personalized experience including time to explore the exhibition on their own as well as time for questions.

Remember, the school year is the busy season, so have an alternate program and date in mind. Two programs with lunch in between make a full day for most schools. State of the Arts: Toshiko Takaezu: Portrait of an Artist January 6; 1 pm; 30 minutes; Auditorium; FREE This half-hour documentary shows us the dramatic landscapes and simple pleasures that influence and inform the work of this highly original artist.
January 13 & 27; 1 pm; 30 minutes; Auditorium; FREE Rich, vivid cinematography brings to life the people and places along the Delaware River as this program looks at how the river plays a significant role in their lives. The Emmy nominated documentary starts in New York and travels 'downriver' looking at the various styles of fishing which occur on the river. The program then examines various professions that depend on the river and looks at how the environment of the river has improved over the past few years.
NJN Specials: A Greener Greater Newark
January 20; 1 pm; 30 minutes; Auditorium; FREE
The people in the city of Newark are working to reverse decades of neglect by "greening" their personal and shared spaces - from their homes and city blocks to their neighborhood parks. A Greener Greater Newark looks at the grassroots efforts of the Greater Newark Conservancy and The Trust for Public Land and how their actions produce long-term benefits that reach far beyond physical landscape improvement. A Greener Greater Newark is a visually compelling look at a side of Newark not often seen in the media; this half-hour special profiles residents who have built community gardens and participate in neighborhood beautification programs, and other block leaders who have joined together with schools and other organizations to take back small but valuable park space. |
Lessons in Tolerance
Thursday, January 21; 5 pm; 2 1/2 hours; Grades: 3-12; Museum Classroom; Reservations Required; FREE
An examination of the causes and social costs of the Holocaust, genocide and persecution, followed by the development of positive artistic and intellectual responses to these events. As part of the program, students make a commitment to practicing the ideals of tolerance while the Institute Staff is present; and modifying future behaviors. They will also recreate art that was used as non-violent response to oppression: body percussion, code songs, arpilleras and mandalas.
